Fenella BSc PGCE MEd
Fostering learning through connection and storytelling

Hello & Welcome
Hello, I’m Fenella (or Miss Symes). I am currently Head of Early Years and a newly published children’s book author. My background also includes pharmacy and being an educational researcher at ETH Zurich and University of Cambridge.
I’m passionate about helping children learn through stories, especially through picture books and puppetry.
- Learning Sciences (Early Years) Researcher and Consultant - ETH Zurich
- MEd Mathematics Education - Univeristy of Cambridge
- PGCE General Primary - Univeristy of Cambridge
- BSc Pharmacy - Univeristy of Nottingham
Intergenerational Care - connecting schools and care homes.
My previous projects have included setting up intergenerational connections between schools and care homes, to foster empathy and communication skills in children and reduce loneliness with the ageing population.

Puppets in the Classroom
My research primarily explored the mathematical cognition of young children (aged 4-5 years) and the critical role that executive functions play in this development. I investigated innovative strategies to enhance early years maths outcomes by fostering interactions between children and puppets. This approach aims to strengthen children's mathematical reasoning skills while reducing maths anxiety.
