  • Intergenerational Care - connecting schools and care homes.

My previous projects have included setting up intergenerational connections between schools and care homes, to foster empathy and communication skills in children and reduce loneliness with the ageing population.

    Puppets in the Classroom

My research primarily explored the mathematical cognition of young children (aged 4-5 years) and the critical role that executive functions play in this development. I investigated innovative strategies to enhance early years maths outcomes by fostering interactions between children and puppets. This approach aims to strengthen children's mathematical reasoning skills while reducing maths anxiety.

    Tutoring from 5-16

    A few testimonials:

"Miss Symes is simply magical. Her energy and enthusiam for learning is infectious and our boys love their time with her. Her sessions are always engaging and tailored to each of our children and their interests at the time. She is so flexible and if their attention wanders in a session she can turn their distraction into a new learning journey for them. Their confidence has improved so much and the 1:1 sessions have inspired creativity (particularly in writing) in ways we didn't think possible" - Louise T

"We were incredibly fornunate to find Fenella to support my son as he struggled toward the end of his GCSE maths. She was not only an outstanding tutor who explained everything with clarity, but also a truly kind and warm person. She kept Tom engaged and he genuinely enjoyed his sessions with her" - Adele R

"Fenella was a highly supportive and effective maths tutor. She gave me homework after each session to reinforce what we covered, explained concepts in ways that made sense to me, and shared practical exam tips that boosted both my confidence and performance" - Tom

    Mathematical Story Picture Books

I create Early Years maths resources based on mathematical story picture books. Using stories in maths supports children in overcoming maths anxiety and helps them connect mathematical concepts to their everyday experiences. My approach is grounded in my master’s research (MEd) at the University of Cambridge.
